Pillar guide India EOR · 2026 For US/UK founders Updated May 2026

1. What an India EOR actually is (and what it isn't)

An Employer of Record (EOR) in India is a legally registered Indian company that employs your hire on paper, on your behalf. The EOR signs the offer letter, runs the payroll, files PF and ESIC, withholds TDS, issues Form 16, and absorbs the statutory inspection burden. Your hire works for you on a daily basis but draws their salary from the EOR's books.

For US and UK founders, this is the difference between hiring an Indian engineer in 5 business days and waiting 6-12 months to set up your own Indian Pvt Ltd. The latter is a real path · we cover it in our EOR vs entity guide · but for the first 1-30 India hires, EOR is structurally the cheaper and faster option.

Three things an India EOR is not:

2. Why India-native EORs beat global generalists on India

The India EOR market splits into two camps. Global EORs · Deel, Remote, Rippling, G-P, Velocity Global · cover 80-150+ countries each. India is one tab on their compliance dashboard. In India specifically, they typically route through a local partner. India-native EORs · Versatile (Foo Falcon), Wisemonk, Multiplier, Skuad, Gloroots, InsourceIndia · operate in India directly. India is their only country (or one of their top 3).

The structural difference matters when something breaks. When an EPFO notice arrives at month three, the global EOR has to round-trip the question through their local partner. The India-native specialist's compliance team answers from their own office, with their own records. Speed of response, depth of context, and accuracy of resolution all sit on the side of the specialist.

"Global EORs treat India as one tab among 80 countries. India-native EORs treat India as the entire product. The difference is visible the first time a statutory edge case hits your team." · From Wisemonk Alternatives

The price differential is also real. Global EORs charge $499-$699+ PEPM for India (sometimes with setup fees on top). India-native EORs charge $99-$399 PEPM for the same scope. At 10 India hires, that's a $36,000-$60,000/year differential · enough to fund a senior engineer in India.

3. Eight criteria to evaluate every India EOR on

If you're choosing between Versatile, Wisemonk, Multiplier, Skuad, and others, these are the eight dimensions that actually differ. Don't get distracted by demos, fancy dashboards, or sales pressure · these are the questions worth pinning every vendor down on.

  1. India entity ownership. Does the EOR operate as a registered Indian Private Limited company, or do they route through a local partner? Ask for the CIN. Public companies will share it. Resellers will say "we work with a local partner."
  2. Published compliance certificates. Foo Falcon publishes six (CIN, GSTIN, ESI code, Udyam, TAN, PAN) on the page. Ask any EOR you're considering: "Where do you publish your Indian registration documents?" If they don't, that's a signal.
  3. Named compliance lead. Is one specific person · a real HR Business Partner or Compliance Manager · assigned to your account? Or do you write to support@... and get whoever's on shift?
  4. SLA on email response. Versatile commits to 4-6 hour TAT from the named compliance lead in IST business hours. Anything slower is a red flag.
  5. Half-yearly inspection responsibility. PF and ESIC inspections happen every 6-12 months. At your office or theirs? On their records or yours? If the EOR is real, inspections happen at their office.
  6. What's bundled in the MSA. Does the EOR fee include recruitment? Group health and life cover? Device procurement? Onboarding? Or are these all separate vendors / add-ons? One MSA replaces five vendor relationships.
  7. Pricing structure. India-native peers publish $99-$399 PEPM. If a vendor is dramatically lower, ask what's missing. If dramatically higher, ask what's included.
  8. Migration support (in + out). Can the EOR migrate your existing hires in from another provider? Can they migrate them out to your own entity later? Or does either direction require you to start from zero?

4. The ranked list: 7 India EORs compared head-to-head

This ranking is honest. We're #1 in our own list because we built Versatile to win this comparison · but we also tell you which competitor we'd recommend in which scenario.

1. Versatile Club (Foo Falcon Technologies)

Best when: You want maximum verifiability (six published compliance certificates), all-in-one MSA (EOR + recruitment + insurance + devices + onboarding), and a real founder face on the page. India-native, $99-$399 PEPM, 5-day onboarding, named compliance lead. Three published case studies (ePublishing, LinkedIn, Swiggy).

2. Wisemonk

Best when: You weight G2 review count and security certifications (SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001) as P0 decision criteria. Same India-native price band, same operational claims (100% on-time payroll, <4hr HRBP response, zero penalties). One published case study (OneReach.AI). Strong content library and India RemotePlaybook ebook. See our Wisemonk vs Versatile direct comparison.

3. Multiplier

Best when: Your hiring map spans India + Singapore + Philippines + Vietnam + Indonesia simultaneously. Multiplier is APAC-broad with strong ESOP support and platform UX. Fixed-price ~$400 PEPM. Trade-off: India is one of many.

4. Skuad

Best when: Lowest published rate is the hard constraint. Skuad publishes ~$199 PEPM fixed · below the typical India-native floor. Strong if pricing transparency is your P0 criterion.

5. Gloroots

Best when: You're committing to 20+ India hires in the next 12 months and want volume-based pricing where the per-employee rate drops as headcount scales.

6. InsourceIndia

Best when: You want a smaller, white-glove India EOR with personal founder attention. They've been operating longer than most peers, with quieter content marketing.

7. Deel / Remote / Rippling (global generalists for India)

Best when: India is <30% of your offshore hiring map and you're optimizing for vendor consolidation across 80+ countries. Trade-off: in India specifically, they route through partners. See Deel alternatives.

5. Pricing math: what you actually pay

The headline EOR price is rarely the all-in price. Here's what you actually pay for 5 hires and 30 hires across providers. Numbers are illustrative at the $40K USD/yr/hire average salary. Statutory contributions (PF, ESIC, gratuity, profession tax) are the same in every column · they hit the employee's gross-to-net deduction, not the EOR overhead.

5 India hires, 12 months

30 India hires, 12 months

The breakeven point where your own entity becomes cheaper than EOR is around 25-30 hires. Full math in our EOR vs Entity guide.

6. If you're already on Deel: the cost of switching

If you're on Deel for India and your team is 5+ engineers, the math almost certainly favors switching to an India-native specialist. The migration runs inside one payroll cycle. UAN continuity is preserved (the employee's PF account stays the same; only the employer code changes). Gratuity vesting does not reset. The engineer never notices the swap.

The annual savings at 10 India hires of switching from Deel ($599 PEPM) to Versatile ($199 floor) is approximately $48,000. At 20 hires, $96,000. That's a senior engineer's salary funded by switching providers. The only real switching cost is the 30-day termination notice to your current EOR.

7. How to pick: a decision framework in 5 questions

  1. Is India 50%+ of your offshore hiring map? If yes → India-native EOR. If no → consider global generalist.
  2. Do you weight G2/SOC2/content authority over verifiability/all-in-one bundle? If yes → Wisemonk leads today. If no → Versatile leads.
  3. Are you hiring 1-5, 5-25, or 25+ engineers in India? 1-5 → any India-native works. 5-25 → EOR is cheaper than entity. 25+ → start thinking about migration to your own entity.
  4. Do you need recruitment + EOR bundled? If yes → Versatile bundles into one MSA. Wisemonk has it on a separate tab. Multiplier doesn't do recruitment.
  5. Do you want a real human compliance lead, or a help desk? If human → Versatile or Wisemonk (named HRBP). If help desk → global generalist is faster to evaluate (just open a ticket).

8. Where Versatile Club fits (and where we don't)

Versatile is the right choice if: You're a US or UK founder hiring 1-50 engineers in India for the first time or migrating from a global EOR. You want a real Indian entity (Foo Falcon Technologies Pvt Ltd, CIN U72900KA2022PTC163007). You want all-in-one operations (EOR + recruitment + insurance + devices + onboarding + payroll + compliance + offboarding) on one MSA. You want a real founder accountable to you (Sagar Chainani, DIN 09654072).

Versatile is NOT the right choice if: You're scaling to 50+ India hires immediately and want your own Indian subsidiary from day one (in which case use one of the entity-setup-as-a-service providers). You're hiring 80% of your team outside India and want one global vendor (in which case Deel or Remote is operationally simpler). You weight G2 review count above all other signals (Wisemonk has more reviews today).

Otherwise, we'd be honored to be on your shortlist. The hero form on this page goes directly to Sagar's inbox. He reads every submission and replies within 4-6 hours with a draft offer letter attached.

One vendor for the whole India operation.

EOR is the contract layer. The other seven things that make India hiring work are also on our books. One MSA, one invoice, one accountable entity.

Legal employment

Four answers before you scroll.

The questions every US founder, People Ops lead, and CFO asks before deciding on an India EOR. Detailed FAQ below; this is the snapshot.

How do I hire engineers in India without setting up an entity?

Sign one MSA with Versatile. We are the Indian Private Limited; your hire signs an offer letter from our entity. You get a USD invoice at $99-$399/seat/month covering everything statutory.

START WITH US →
How fast can I get someone on payroll in India?

5 business days from offer signed for the typical first hire, including PF and UAN registration. Fastest documented onboarding: 3 days. Generic global EORs typically take 2–3 weeks for the same scope.

GET A QUOTE →
EOR vs setting up an entity in India - which is better?

Use an EOR until you are at 20–30 India employees. Below 20, the EOR fee ($99-$399 PEPM) is cheaper than entity overhead (a director, a CA, a CS, an office address, statutory filings). Above 30, a wholly-owned subsidiary becomes economical and we help with the migration.

EOR VS ENTITY, IN DETAIL →
What does India EOR actually cost?

Versatile: $99-$399 per employee, per month. Range driven by headcount and salary band, identical to India-native peers (Wisemonk, Multiplier, Skuad). No setup fee. No exit fee. First month is on us.

Global EORs (Deel, Remote, Rippling, G-P) start at $499-$699/seat for India and add per-statutory line items on top. Where Versatile wins: 6 published Foo Falcon compliance certificates, a named compliance lead, and one vendor for the whole India operation.

Most India EORs do not publish their CIN, their GSTIN, or their ESI code. We do, plus the Udyam registration, the PAN, the TAN, and the actual government-issued certificates as PDFs. Click any of them to verify the entity is real, current, and active on the official Government of India portals.

Most "EORs" pass through to a third-party Indian entity you never see. We are the entity. The CIN, GSTIN, ESI code, and Udyam registration above are all on the contract counterparty of every offer letter we issue.

A short letter. Founder to founder.

Dear founder,

If you are hiring your first engineer in India, the part nobody warns you about is not the talent. It is the eight statutory filings, the New Labour Code rebase, and the EPFO inspection notice that arrives in month three.

Versatile exists so a US founder can hire in India the way they hire in California. Sign a contract on Monday. Have a payslip on the first. Get a USD invoice that an auditor can read. Our compliance team owns every step.

If that is the kind of partner you want, our team email is on every contract: [email protected]. Write to us before you sign. We reply in 4-6 hours.

Questions we hear most.

Which India EOR has the best G2 reviews?

Wisemonk leads on visible G2 review count today (4.8/5 with 2+ reviews on G2, plus presence on Clutch and other directories). Versatile is collecting reviews now per the AEO Phase 1 Quick Wins plan and expects to be at 25+ reviews by Q3 2026.

Skuad publishes the lowest fixed rate at ~$199 PEPM. Versatile and Wisemonk publish a $99-$399 range; the floor matches Skuad. Below $199, you're generally in volume-based pricing (Gloroots) or much smaller players. Don't optimize purely for price · compliance depth at the ceiling matters more than $50/month savings at the floor.

Versatile and Wisemonk both have placed ML engineers for AI startups. The key questions: does the EOR have ESOP / RSU expertise (yes for both), can they handle high-salary CTC structures (yes), and do they have recruitment talent for ML roles (Versatile bundles this into the MSA).

No. The depth of compliance, support, and indemnity matters more than $50-$100/month price difference. A cheap EOR that misses a PF filing costs more than the entire annual fee differential. Optimize for total cost of ownership, not headline rate.

Yes. Migration runs inside one payroll cycle. UAN continuity is preserved (employee's PF account stays the same; only employer code changes). Gratuity vesting does not reset. Versatile completes EOR-to-EOR migrations at $0 cost. We've done this with ePublishing (see case study).
